Lucien van Valen has received an MA in Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (1981) and in Chinese Languages and Cultures at Leiden University (1997).
In 2005 she has received her PhD from Leiden University, combining both fields of expertise in her thesis: The Matter of Chinese Painting, Case studies of 8th century Murals. Her current research centers on the technique of Chinese painting.
In 2007-2008 she teaches art classes at MIADA a design academy in Chongqing China.
